I love the Italian painter Caravaggio – his use of light and shade (known as chiaroscuro), and his method of painting first in black and white (known as grisaille) before building colour on top with washes. I found that the grisaille style really suited my preferred method of painting.
This was actually my first real oil painting. I bought a great book on how to paint like the old masters and just worked my way through it.
